In brief: Log in to your “Public Finances” account on impots.gouv.fr to pay online or sign up for direct debit. You can also access the “Pay” service immediately after submitting your tax return or later, before the payment deadline.
Payment methods
For income tax, withholding at source and any advance payments are debited from your account or require online payment in your “Public Finances” account. Income tax can no longer be paid by cheque since the introduction of withholding at source.
For property taxes and related taxes, the housing tax on second homes or vacant dwellings, the tax on vacant dwellings, the tax on commercial wastelands and the real estate wealth tax, payment by direct debit or online is mandatory when the amount exceeds €300.
Accessing your “Public Finances” account
Go to the impots.gouv.fr website and open your “Public Finances” account. You can then sign up for direct debit or access the online payment service.
Paying after submitting your tax return
Online payment and filing your tax return are two separate processes. After submitting your tax return, you can access the “Pay” service immediately or return to it later, provided you meet the payment deadline.
Electronic filing
If your main residence has internet access, you must file your income tax return and its appendices electronically. Filing your tax return does not constitute payment: you must complete the payment process separately when necessary.
